MiCoy 360degree 3D Displays

 At the 3D Entertainment Summit and the Nvidia Graphics Micoy was showing their 360 degree viewable 8K 3D display. The immersive display system is centered around a unique projector system with a custom render and lens setup. The projector operates with a multiple lens arrangement to address a variety of dome shaped screens that are above the heads of the viewer.

The planetarium like environment, is targeted at architectural design, scientific visualization and marketing/entertainment media. The high speed projection (supporting upwards of 60 fps for stereo 3D) and high resolution – 1080p, 2K, 4K and even 8K source material creates a unique visual experience. In combination with anaglyph, passive polarization, and active shutter 3D glasses, the full view environment gives the viewer the ability to walk around and the various sides of the 3D objects that would be difficult to image in any other manner.

For architectural and industrial design , the ability to have multiple people (some of the domes support large groups of viewers) share the imagery and discuss it from different view angles. The medical uses include treatment of phobias, remote medical treatment and training, and physical therapy and fitness. With the higher resolution displays that are possible with the system, virtual surgery and advanced medical procedure are being explored with the platform. The scientific and military uses are primarily focused on real time visualization for biological and earth science research. Pharmaceutical and molecular dynamics are projected in a VR fashion that is not available in a planar view format.

For the high resolution display environment, the rendering time for image generation can be excessive. The Micoy system can utilize the results of render farms from GPU based HPC cloud farms (such as available from Peer1 Hosting) that can create the images for clients without a private cloud resource. The projection system supports multiple forms of 3D, so most render formats can be displayed.

The projectors can be installed in fixed facilities as well as thier dome products. These dome based system can be used for marketing expo type events. One application that is gaining in popularity due to the immersive multi-person capabilities is the use of the 3D dome for video gaming competitions. The gaming environment is very well suited to the projection system as the render from the games is real time and high resolution. The software supports multiple views and view angles so the physical 3D shape of the dome accentuates the 3D VR effects of the story.
