Casio introduces on-line editing and new camera – CES2011

January 5, 2011, CES, Las Vegas-Casio introduced a new on-line editing website and photo repository called Imaging Square that takes any digital image and converts it into “digital art”. The site has two tools for modifying the images that don’t require additional tools and high levels of tool expertise.

Digital Craft converts images using decomposition, analysis, and other image processing techniques to extract details from lower resolution areas. In effect, this tool performs a bracket and merge function from a single image to increase contrast and brightness. The other tool adds textures to simulate silk screening or painting. The result is a picture that looks like a painting or other artwork. Old school film users called this process posterization. A user could add other effects like warping from the tool palette.

In addition to the tools, the site can create the repository for unfinished projects and archives. In addition, there is a gallery function for photo art exhibits. Their expectation is that these capabilities will change the world of digital art.

The other announcement is a new camera called TRYX. The frame, optics, and body/screen are independent and separate. The frame can be used as a handle in HD video capture mode, or as stand for timed photos. The motion detection capabilities can inhibit the timer soothe user can settle into the picture before the image is captured. The body and LCD can be flipped to face the same way or the opposite way from the lens.

The TRYX has numerous in-camera editing capabilities including the digital art functions. The USB 2.0 interface allows sharing and easy transfers to other platforms. All of this functionality is driven by a new image processing engine which has two CPU cores, fixed logic, and a reconfigurable compute core. The processing engine enables faster image capture and faster image processing for storage. The user can manage the camera functions via the integrated touch screen.
