Display and Lighting Design – Rambus at STL
Feb 24, 2011, Santa Clara, CA – At the Strategies in Light Conference (STL), we had a chance to talk to technology leader Rambus about their products and technology in the lighting sector. Best known for their memory products and interfaces, Rambus also has a large portfolio of technolgi in the image design , display and lighting designs areas. These are both manufacturing licenses and technology use licenses covering the whole lighting space from materials through optimized design and equipment.
The STL conference is highly dominated by the LED marketplace at this time, due to the large power and life cycle advantages over both incandescent and CFL technologies. Rambus is currently LED mfg agnostic, and their design capabilities are applicable to lighting management, color and light mixing, HB light output, and collect & reflect technologies. To support the industry as it progresses to the 2nd generation of LED designs, they are suppling not only reference designs, but also complete supply chains for manufacturing and delivery of the products.
Display backlight options
One of the major areas of color mixing is to produce uniformity of the light in both intensity and color temperature. This is a major issue for TVs and large format computer displays which need to have reliable color portrayal for content creation and playback. This extends over to the higher brightness application of commerical digital signage. The backlights for these devices have extended duty cycles, longer life cycles and higher power, in low air flow and high interference environments. The reference designs and specialized supply chains are different from those of commercial products.
Finally, their design solutions address general lighting for residential and entertainment applications. The creation of specific color temperature, high stability, low power and low heat dissipation lighting is a key requirement for the entertainment light space. This lighting is used for both content capture lighting as well as live performance stage lighting.

The structure of the supply chains involved, keeps current with shifting governmental regulations on the manufacturing and distribution landscape, and help the design companies focus on innovative application solutions rather than compliance definitions and issues. Rambus has licensed their technologies in the lighting and display space to a large number of the leaders in LED lighting as well as a large number of smaller speciality product providers.
