Content Aware Networking – OTTCON 2011
March 1, 2011 – San Jose, CA – BTI Systems presented a solution for the bandwidth difficulties with increasing on-demand OTT content that is on the standard cable distribution lines. Their solution is to use a content aware, local network cache for the on-demand data.
They have a created a caching appliance that uses a policy based soluition to look at every packet for cacheable content. The device caches only high request content that is used for localized play-out. It addresses all the cacheable content that is addressable on the internet vir an OTT service such as videos, games, music, software updates, still graphics, and even common large data objects.
The premise to leverage the 80:20 rule on content, which is that there are multiple requests for the same content in a given service area and that 80 percent of this content is repeated. The product identified the repetative content, at the edge of network, caches it locally and then serves it locally. This reduces the main line network congestion & bandwidth as the repeated data requests are not passed through. There is not active managment needed to select content, it is dynamic based on the users requests. As the requests and delivery are live and data caching is transient, there is no need to to negotiate with the content owners. A typical placement in a network configuration follows.

The results of this localized data, is a 20-40% peak bandwidth reductions, and a 60% reduction in the growth curve for bandwidth on increasing demand. This reduction is sufficient to allows for additional private premium content to be added a tiered service structure. As the system provides measurability and both accelerates and delivers local content, these services can be added within the Special Services loop-hole in the net-neutrality rules.
