AT&T Mobility – Connections 2011

 June 29, 2011 – Santa Clara, CA – Glen Lurie, President of Emerging Devices at AT&T discussed the new connections for a digital life. Mr. Lurie is best known as the person who brought the iPhone to AT&T when the other carriers passed on the opportunity. Glen talked about the future where everything is connected and device to device (D2D) communication is a big part of the business.

Currently the business is growing very rapidly in wireless, it is the faster growing market inthe world at this time. The wireless penetration in 1995=13%, in 2010=96%. The anticipation is that in 2013=107% meaning, there will be a great deal of D2D traffic that is above and beyond people connecting. The current growth rate for data in wireless is also extremely high, it is grown at a rate of 8000% in the past 4 years. Wireless data has gone from 1/2PB per month in 2007 to 12PB per month in 2010 and is expected to reach 150PB per month in 2015. This data has also changed from email and SMS message to apps/games/web surfing to both streaming content viewing and content creation (still pictures and video) upload from the mobile devices. The D2D space will have large portion of image data to the cloud as their standard traffic model.

These smart devices are going to be key elements in simple verticals such as the iPod with iTunes. Areas of growth are expected to be the connected car, home health, home automation, unified media and unified communications. These are all expected to sync our personal settings to the appropriate environment. A major challenge is to blend these business ecosystems so there is a unified single bill model.

To help bring about and qualify the new devices, many of which are being created by companies with little or no RF experience, AT&T has opened and is operating a development community. This community not only helps with IP and implementation plans, but also business mdoel deployment and business process development.
