ARM Mobile & DTV products dominate graphics platform

August 2012 – At Siggraph 2012, ARM was showing the results of their new silicon for their second generation graphics cores in the Mali T600 family. While showing off existing products with their Mali400 series cores that are the dominant graphics in the Samsung SII and SIII mobile phones. The new cores the T624 and T628 for graphics drawing and T678 for graphics compute, are in addition to the first generation cores the T604 and T658. These are now targeted for about 160 OEM products in the near future in the mobile and DTV space.

The chips utilize a new “Tripipe” pipeline architecture that double the arithmetic pipeline to 4 lanes. The new cores are compliant with the Kronos 3.0 release of Open GL 3.0 and Open CL 1.1, as well as other open standards. These new cores are scalable to 4K displays using 1-8 cores in both display and compute mode.

Other enhancements include GPU code for gesture recognition and speech recognitions, and thier new ASTC support. ASTC is Adaptive Scalable Texture Compression that works for 2D, 3D and LDR applications and brings system level optimization and control of the texture function. The ASTC operation is being incorporated into their development tools for power management to allow game and content creators to effectively use the new command and feature structure.

The cores are now available for licensing, and should be appearing in products for this holiday season and CES 2013.
