Pericom releases multi-channel video decoder products

October 2012 – To address the rapidly growing PCIe based security and surveillance systems marketplace, Pericom held a briefing to introduce an 8 channel and 4 channel video decoder product. The two parts, which are both sampling and in production now are the PI7C9x9208 and the PI7C9x9204S.

The new surveillance systems have a increased number of cameras which increases the cabel leght in the system and now go to either DVR, NVR or dedicated PC. All of thes platforms support PCIe Gen 1 as a bus interface. The new parts use a x1 interface to decode the 10bit video data that being captured by the cameras. As typical system can use the octal chip to craee a 64 channel system on a standard 8 bus socket x86 motherboard.

Using Pericom’s proprietary sync-tip detection technology, the parts can decode a signal across up to 500 meters of coaxial cable for standard NTSC/PAL video signals using regular RG-75 cable. With high quality cable, the run length can be used to 700 meters. Both new video decoders support standard ‘656’ and ‘422’ video output signals from a standard RGB input. Providing these digital outputs are General Purpose Input Output (GPIO) pins that open additional application options. Both parts include a programmable I2C interface, per channel fully integrated AGCs, multiple sample rates, format conversion, motion detection a video FIFO and scalar and audio in addition to a flexible multiplexing configuration.

The 8 decoder channel system supports 8 mono audio input and the 4 decoder channel part supports 4 stereo audio inputs. The video processing channel with the per channel AGCs and filters enables proper decoding even when the camera connections and cable are of poor quality. This allows the system to boost the surveillance signal integrity and reliability. Both the 4 and 8 channel video decoders provide real time video/audio decoding, in addition to supporting non-real time 8 and 16-channel inputs. They both use a 5-line adaptive comb filters for optimal Luma-Chroma separation, resulting in an improved quality digital video output.

The video surveillance equipment market is growing by a 9.5% CAGR through 2016 according to In-Stat. These decoder products are well targeted to the space with their high density features and the secondary benefit to the system designer of a reduced BOM cost and board space, while improving signal quality and performance.
