Black Magic at NAB 2013
April 8, 2013, National Association of Broadcasters, Las Vegas—We talked with Black Magic Design about their latest product releases. The company has new products in all areas of audio and video.
To address the forthcoming 4k workflows, they have upgraded their products to be 6G-SDI capable, a format that does not have any standards. New products that support 6G-SDI connections, include the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K, ATEM Production Studio 4K live production studio, Blackmagic Audio Monitor and ATEM Studio Converter 2. 6G-SDI allows Ultra HD video to be sent down a single common BNC type cable, is low cost and switches between SD, HD and Ultra HD formats. This means that any Ultra HD equipped product that supports 6G-SDI is able to operate in regular SD and HD video formats using the same BNC connections.
Blackmagic Design announced that its entire range of desktop video products will support the next generation of professional video editing software from Adobe, including Premiere Pro and After Effects. The also are working with Autodesk to collaborate on future integrations of integrated workflows between Autodesk technology and Blackmagic Design’s PCIe and Thunderbolt-based desktop video capture and playback products.
Audio Monitor, a new rack mount audio monitoring solution with 6G-SDI video for Ultra HD video sources, as well as regular analog audio and SDI video inputs, integrated video monitor and integrated LED level meter.
MultiDock, a rack-based hard disk chassis with Thunderbolt technology that allows up to 4 hard disks or solid state disks to be inserted and mounted on any Thunderbolt based Mac or Windows computer.
Pocket Cinema Camera, a pocket sized digital cinema camera that includes features
such as Super 16mm sized 1080HD sensor, 13 stops of dynamic range, built in SD card recorder for Apple ProRes, lossless compressed CinemaDNG RAW capture and active Micro Four Thirds lens mount.
Production Camera 4K, a 4K digital film camera with an large Super 35mm size sensor with professional global shutter, combined with precision EF mount optics and high quality Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) file recording. Built in SSD recorder allows long duration recording onto solid state disks. Built in touch screen LCD for camera settings and metadata entry compatible with popular video editing software including Final Cut Pro X.
DaVinci Resolve 10, an upgrade that includes new features for integrating the workflows of multiple different software products used in the film and television industry. DaVinci Resolve 10 has upgraded on-set tools, upgraded editing features, support for OpenFX plug ins as well as new tools for delivering final project masters to cinemas. DaVinci Resolve 10 includes enhanced editing features and allows online finishing of edits performed in other popular editing software.
New editing features for DaVinci include full multi-track editing with 16 channels of audio per clip and unlimited video and audio tracks in the timeline. Audio can be synced or trimmed and dragged independently of the timeline. Other new editing features include extensive ripple, roll, slide and slip clip trimming support which display dynamically on the timeline and viewer. The viewer also allows split screen display to show in and out points of adjacent clips.
HyperDeck Studio Pro SSD recorder/player that will add Ultra HD recording in Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) format. This update will be available in May as a free update for all HyperDeck Studio Pro customers.
DeckLink Mini Monitor and DeckLink Mini Recorder are compact PCIe cards that include PCIe shields for both regular PCIe slots and low profile slots commonly found on servers. DeckLink Mini Monitor and DeckLink Mini Recorder are two separate products, one for recording SDI and HDMI video and the other model for playing back SDI or HDMI video. High speed PCI Express with PCIe shields for both regular and low profile slots included. Developer SDK available to download free.
SmartScope Duo features two large 8 inch LCD screens in a rack mount design that is less than an inch thick. SmartScope Duo includes powerful image processing allowing each of the two screens to be independently selected between video monitoring and waveform monitoring. There are 7 types of waveform display that can be selected by the user, including waveform, vectorscope, RGB parade, YUV parade, histogram and an audio scope with 16 channels of SDI audio and audio phase meter.
The new ATEM Production Studio 4K lets customers connect up to 8 SD, HD or Ultra HD 4K video cameras, disk recorders and computers for live production. ATEM Production Studio 4K includes all the features expected from a professional switcher, including chroma key, transitions, media pool, downstream keyers, audio mixer, multi view and the world’s first 6G-SDI and HDMI 4K video connections.
ATEM Studio Converter 2 with enhanced talk back features and the addition of 6G-SDI support allowing support for Ultra HD video when 6G optical fiber modules become available. The converter has 4 built in optical fiber SDI converters, one for each camera feed up to 25 miles away. Optical fiber converters to 3G-SDI and de embedded balanced analog XLR stereo audio out.
