TPLink AC750 Range Extender

November 2015 – As more devices move to a wireless interface, coverage of the signal and decent signal strength to these devices becomes an issue. To address the gaps and drop out spots TP-Link has introduced their new RE210 WiFi Range Extender that supports the new 802.11AC protocol at the speed of 750Mbps. The unit also supports a Gigabit Ethernet wired port for connection to smart TVs, gaming consoles or other wired smart appliances.

The AC750 WiFi is a dual band multi-antenna configuration it supports 400Mbps in the 5GHz band and 350Mbps in the 2.4GHz band. The unit is easy to configure and use – it has a built in power plug connection, and dual antennas that can be repositioned. The unit was surprisingly easy to setup to the wireless network. Once the unit is plugged in, you connect to the device via a web page, follow the couple of steps to select the network to extend, add the passwords to allow the unit to access the networks – both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks separately – and the unit connects. From that point on, the device is just part of the existing networks.

These consumer and SOHO range extender have traditionally had a challenge of DHCP issues or IP V4 & IP V6 issues. This unit did not. It conncted without incident and performed properly when tested on BOTH home networks in the 192.168.x.x IP range and business class/fiber class 10.1.x.x IP range. The unit also connected to BOTH 802.11n routers and added the AC capability and 802.11ac routers without issue.

A very nice feature of the device is the portability. Once configured, the device can be unplugged and moved to another area. As long as the unit can receive some wifi signal, it will reconnect to the networks within about 1 minute and provide new connected access. This feature is particularly useful when there are events outside, such as a backyard or parking lot, where the access is needed on a temporary basis.

The device is currently available at the TP-Link site and a both e-tailers and retailers that carry networking products.
