Maxim Integrated Rolls Out Automotive Grade LED Controller

June 2016 – Bringing new flexibility to the automotive lighting marketplace Maxim Integration addresses key issues for the OEM community. Designed for the extended temperature range of -40C to +125C and full power specification up to 65V the MAX20078 LED controller brings a full automotive grade solution to market.

The controller, which is a fully integrated constant current output Buck Converter is designed to use external drive MOSFETS to run most types of LEDs from single High Brightness designs to matrix layouts to dimmable interior low power lights. The choice to not integrate the FETS into the device gives the OEM the flexibility of a common circuit and solution, with the ability to size and design drivers and heat sinks as needed at the point of use of the lights. To address the multiple applications, the device can operate with switching speeds between 100KHz and 1MHz while simultaneously having a very low EMI so the switching rate does not impact other systems in the vehicle.

These characteristics make the device applicable for all consumer engine types of gasoline, hybrid and full electric operation. As a result, the device can not only be used for HB applications as headlights and tail lights, but also interior applications such as drivers for HUDs and rear seat infotainment. Both of these applications need to address a wide range of power features being very bright during the day to have the displays visible on glass in direct sunlight to low power so it is unobtrusive during night driving.

Since the controller is a core PWM controller without the integrated drivers, the solution can work for both visible light and IR LED systems. IR systems are becoming a core solution for driver awareness, and other occupant sensor solutions.
