Etymotic Intros New Hearing Protector Category
October 26, 2012, AES Convention, San Francisco—Etymotic has developed a new hearing protector category with the introduction of their new in-ear product. This hearing protector includes active, gain-switchable hearing protection with dynamic protection response.
The company is adding to its line of audio products and hearing protection devices. Their in-ear products are used for hearing assessment, improvement, protection, and enhancement. The new protectors are directed towards those in the audio business who need to hear softer sounds while getting protection from excessive sound levels.
The active protector MP-9-15 is an alternative to foam ear plugs and also to custom hearing protectors that need an audiologist for fitting. The dynamic protector provides a 15 dB mode where the sound levels are unchanged until a safe threshold is reached. Then the protector starts reducing the sound level. The other mode offers a 6 dB gain and provides a 9 dB reduction at the 85 dB threshold. (see figure)
The gradual compression is level sensitive and meets the latest OSHA, NIOSH, and blast protection standards. The active circuitry has a fast attack and release to prevent impact noise from getting through. The stereo pair has an operating bandwidth from 20 Hz-16 kHz. The units use standard zinc-air batteries, and the batteries are expected to last about 2-3 weeks of normal operation. Low battery operation is indicated by a pulsing volume, and goes to a motor-boating mode when the batteries are near end of life. When the batteries cease operating, the protectors behave as standard 35 dB passive protectors.
The hearing protector set includes a full range of ear tips for a good fit with any ear, as well as a host of other accessories. A pair of the protectors list for $399 and the devices are available from their dealers. More information is available at http://www.etymotic.com/hp/mp915.html
We are planning a full evaluation of this product in Q1 of ’13.
