Kensington Microsaver brings security to ultrabooks

January 2015 – Kensington is a developer of the current industry standard in laptop protection which is an integrated loop connector in the edge of the chassis of most laptops. The current connector was designed for prior generation devices that incorporated optical drives and rotating storage as the driving industrial design on device thickness. The connector is the core of a mechanical constraint system for the computers.

The new designs for laptops and ultrabooks are to reduce the thickness and weight by replacing the rotating storage with SSD devices that can fit into a component level form factor, and by eliminating the optical drive from being built in. This allows new devices to drop the thickness to the form factor of the interface connectors which is in the 12mm to 19mm thickness range.

The new lock system- the Microsaver- for these thinner devices has the same characteristics of the system for the thicker devices. There is an option for a common key for the locks for IT departments or single keys for individual users. The systems are back compatible with control systems and keys from prior locks.

The key to the new locking system, which is already standard on ultrabooks and convertibles from Lenovo, HP and others, is the offset lock control which allows the hooking mechanism to be both small and hidden while the lock itself is a standard size for easy handling and sturdy construction.

The figure that follows shows the integration of the new locking system into the form factor of the connectors on a current generation diskless ultrabook. These Microsaver locks are currently available from all suppliers where Kensington locking systems are sold.
