SNIA SDC 2015 –PREVIEW- New tech for changing infrastructure by Leticia Smith

September 2015 – The availability of ubiquitous computing with low cost data processing is the current driver for new storage technologies. Both on a direct attach basis or local SAN applications as well as cloud based storage solutions, the challenge to select and optimize the right technology is a growing problem. The upcoming SNIA Storage Developer’s Conference, to be held in Santa Clara at the Hyatt Regency is addressing these challenges.

The show is opening with a full day of deep track tutorials. The topics this year include persistent memory, cloud & interoperability, and a third track of data center infrastructure. In a discussion with Tom Coughlin one of the speakers on the Persistent Memory track, the session on non-volatile storage technologies will be covering information that was reviewed at a high level at the Flash Memory Summit eariler this year, as well as new in depth information on some of the technologies being introduced. The track includes speakers from Intel who will be discussing the new high density cross point memory that was introduced at Intel Developer’s Forum and solutions for distributed storage.

The other sessions include discussions and technical deep dives into the PCI interface, RAID, and Low Latency solutions for tradeoffs and optimization on the data center infrastructure. The multi-tennant data center has to address compute, Hadoop, No-SQL, and SQL storage applications in a common facility. As a result SDN optimization that is dependent on the data traffic is a requirement.

The standard tracks include file systems, /etc, cloud, protocols, management, persistent memory, shingled magnetic recording (SMR), SMB applications, software defined storage, security and new thinking solutions.. These sessions are addressing the needs for immediate response to the user which has multiple solutions on latency reduction and the definition of storage tiers based on the applications being used.

The conference will be addressing these issues on a practical basis in depth in the sessions. The show is targeted at active developers and engineers who are working on these solutions on a daily basis. The event is being held Sept 21-24 at the Hyatt Regency next to the Santa Clara Convention Center.
