IEEE Recognizes IBM Memory Researcher
June 2013 – At the 50th DAC in Austin, TX, a number of IEEE recognition and achievement awards was presented. One of the awards was the Industrial Pioneer Award given by the CASS society. The IEEE Circuit and Systems Society (CASS) Industrial Pioneer Award honors the individual with exceptional and pioneering contributions in translating academic and industrial research results into improved industrial applications and/or commercial products. The 2013 winner was Dr. Rajiv Joshi of IBM’s Watson Research Center in NY.
The research done in the group was key technology for the enablement of SRAM in the IBM server group. The commercialization of these concepts developed in R&D and Academia appeared in various IBM technologies from sub-0.5um to14nm. Additionally the inventions in novel interconnects processes & structures for aluminum, tungsten and copper technologies have been implemented as the core of the production manufacturing flow. These high reliability memories make possible the use of off-site computational servers, content delivery systems, and remote image capture / processing. These memory techniques span NVM, DRAM and SRAM technologies are are used in embedded applications as well as traditional server & content creation workstations.
A keys to the understanding of the memories, which lead to their use in 24/7 high availability servers that are the basis for cloud computing and media content delivery, are based on a pervasive statistical methodology for yield prediction that encompasses technology, circuit design, CAD, predictive techniques and interest in predictive analytics.
Dr. Rajiv Joshi – IBM Watson Research
