Oracle Enterprise in the Cloud

May 9, 2012 – San Francisco, CA – At the All About the Cloud Conference, Chris Baker from Oracle spoke about ISVs and applications being in the cloud for the enterprise. Their surveys show that 37% of companies have a private cloud in place and 21% ae using public clouds.

The main observation was that, unlike projections from a few years back, the applications on the cloud are mostly new and written for the cloud rather than being migrated from existing code. This trend is consistant with the fact that most cloud users, especially those of private clouds, are internal employees rather than external users on out-of network devices. As a result of these two trends, Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) were mostly creating application that are high availability in the clouds which requires them to be platform independent while addressing security, function, business continuity and a scalable architecture. Scalability is a new requirement for applications as the number of users and machines can increase both quickly and dramatically when migrated from a private cloud to ta public cloud.

To address these issues, Chris opined three (3) best practice concepts:
(1) Architect for Rapid Growth
(2) Leverage you Platform as a Strategic Asset
(3) Take Advantage of a Hybrid Deployment Model
These three concepts allow for creation of a SaaS model. An overriding constraints that encompasses the 3 concepts is security. It needs to be a basis of the platform and inherent in the application and its execution, it cannot be added after the fact and be as effective. This security issue persists for private, public and hybrid clouds.

Currently 9 out of 10 SaaS providers use Oracle products in their solutions. These solutions form the core of the platform and support standards based cores such as Java, SQL, and secure query and execution modules. These can be performance optimized using Oracle hardware such as the ExaStack, ExaLogic and ExaStore devices which scale linearly by adding the pre-configured machines. These solutions are applicable for public/private/hybrid clouds and address the needs of SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS providers and their partner the ISVs.
