Square Enix – Tomb Raider at Comic-Con
July 2012 – At Comic-Con 2012, Square Enix had a two sided booth – one featuring collectibles and accessories for their existing line of video games (including Final Fantasy) and one side with both Xbox360 and PS3’s showing the upcoming holiday release games.
I had an opportunity to try out three of their new big name franchise games – the latest revision of Tomb Raider, featuring a new voice actress on the main character; Hitman Absolution and Sleeping Dogs. Tomb Raider and Hitman were being played on an Xbox360 at the show and Sleeping Dogs on PS3.

Tomb Raider is their premier franchise with over 30million copies sold in prior versions. It is the “reference” game for transmedia licensing spawning movies, advertising, magazines, books and merchandise all based on the game play. The Laura Croft character continues to be the most recognized and celebrated female action heroine and an icon for the video games industry. The new game is structured around her character as a hardened survivor in the wilderness and a city of ruins. The character is now voiced by English born actress Camilla Luddington who has starred in Showtime’s Californication and HBO’s True Blood.

The game has a new gritty look and very aggressive action by the characters. The fighting and hunting scenes are more realistic, requiring multiple strikes and multiple arrows to down prey or an enemy. The new version features more realistic background images, with shadows, fog & mist, and dust being enhanced elements in the game play.
