Qualcomm Products at CES 2013

January, 2013, CES, Las Vegas—We talked with Qualcomm about the numerous new products at CES. All things communications and mobile were included in the large set of releases.

Qualcomm Atheros, introduced StreamBoost technology for Wi-Fi routers and gateways. By intelligently managing a home’s broadband connection, StreamBoost gives each device and each application the bandwidth it needs to ensure the best possible experiences in the connected home. This enhancement to 802.11ac enables gigabit speeds for the data traffic.

Along similar lines, Qualcomm announced an Internet of Everything (IoE) development platform, which is based on their QSC6270-Turbo chipset and supports Oracle’s Java ME Embedded 3.2. This IoE development platform will be supported by AT&T, allowing developers to test their solutions and demonstrate functionality on a live network in the design and development phases. The development platform includes several onboard sensors and indicators, including an accelerometer, light sensor and temperature sensor.

In addition, with Wilocity, they released a tri-band reference design for 11ac and 11ad wireless capabilities. The design uses 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and the new 60 GHz bands for networking, data synching, and video and audio streaming.

For new processors, they are now sampling the latest generation of the 800 and 600 Snapdragon processors. The processors offer fully integrated connectivity and a wide variety of communication options, including a 4G LTE modem with data rates up to 150 Mbps, 802.11ac, integrated USB 3.0, Bluetooth and FM. The processor family will move to 28nm High Performance for mobile (HPm) technology for even lower power.

The Snapdragons will capture, playback and display in UltraHD video (with four times 1080p pixel density) hand have dual Image Signal Processors (ISP) with support for computational camera, HD multichannel audio with DTS-HD and Dolby Digital Plus for enhanced audio, higher display resolutions (up to 2560×2048) and Miracast 1080p HD support

The Krait 400 CPU in quad configuration, with speeds of up to 2.3 GHz per core offers asynchronous SMP architecture provides dynamic power sensing and control for peak performance per core, while extending battery life without the use of specialized cores. The Hexagon DSP V5 delivers floating point support, dynamic multithreading and expanded multimedia instructions for enhanced low power performance.

The Vuforia software platform supports real-time text recognition using smartphone and tablet cameras. When released in the spring, Vuforia’s text recognition capability will allow developers to build a new class of educational experiences that incorporate interactivity with real world objects. Additionally, developers can use the text recognition to enable a new form of data entry in addition to on-screen keyboards and speech-to-text.
