SSDs leapfrog HDD in capacity for single drive

March 2016 – In a briefing with Samsung SSI’s Michael Smullen, we discussed the newest high density SSD drive for the enterprise marketplace. The 2.5” SAS SSD uses the new 3D NAND Flash technology from Samsung and sports a industry leading 15.36TB capacity. For a 2.5” product, this surpasses even HDD density.

The drive, which is currently available, adopted the SAS interface for the enterprise community as the capacity requires curation at an extent beyond that of a standard DAS interface. The capacity is being used as a primary fast cache drive for high memory configuration servers in the traditional enterprise space.

The media and entertainment space is gaining awareness of the drive and seeing many applications. The high reliability of the drive and the capacity at low power make the drive a premier capture drive for high frame rate (HFR), high dynamic range (HDR), and high resolution video capture. Currently the hgih end of capture is 4K, HDR, and HFR at 30fps. Next generation video which is going to be used over the summer for the Olympic Games at 8K, 120fps which has a data size that is larger than most standard drives. This new device allows for full run content on a single device.
