AMD at E3
June 11, 2013, E3, Los Angeles—AMD demonstrated their latest APUs and graphics cards for gaming as separate components and as fully assembled machines, desktops, laptops, and graphic accelerator cards. The booth was emphasizing their ability to produce faster and more realistic gaming platforms. They were also giving away A8 APUs and Superman capes.
One part of the showroom exhibited a desktop system with an additional graphics card driving five 50-inch HD screens with display port. The EyeFinity technology is capable of running up to 6 displays simultaneously, and automatically scales the video across the screens. The booth person said that the systems were running almost continuously at the show and could easily exceed a 5-hour run time. This is the first commercial system that could operate and run games for most of a day. Previous systems seemed to overheat and shut down in about 2 hours, so now a “normal” gaming system can run without special cooling or limited game time.
After seeing the big 5-screen display, the single and other multi-monitor systems and laptops seemed puny. Obviously, the juxtaposition of the various systems was for maximum effect and influential presence. The company is running a number of promotions that include a voucher for a copy of various software and games with the purchase of a GPU accelerator board. Go to www.amd.com for the details.
