Universal Audio bring Studio performance to the desktop
January 2014, At the winter NAMM show in Anaheim, Universal Audio introduced the Apollo Twin desktop recording interface. Known for its rack mount recording analog studio equipment, they have now brought this level of performance to the desktop. The well known Apollo interface product, is an analog and digital product that was designed under the idea of making digital sound as good as analog. The product launch was by CEO and son of the founder Bill Putnam Jr, who has taken over leading the company from his father who was the company founder.
The rackmount Apollo product has been on the market for several years, and features XLR and 1/4” jack inputs, A/D converters, fully integrated DSPs, Microphone Pre-Amps, and realtime UAD Plug-in processing. Like all studio equipment, the rackmount product is a high reliability, and low latency product.

The Apollo Twin was designed to support the mobile studio and desktop recording market with true studio quality. The compact design uses the same components as the rackmount solutions, just in a smaller package. This includes a sub-2ms latency with the PCIe bus Thunderbolt (TB) connector and supporting full 24bit/192KHz recording. The UAD Powereds Plug-Ins in the Audio Units support VST, RTAS & AAX64 in all major DAWs, including Unison™ technology offering models of classic tube and transformer-based mic preamps.
Universal Audio Apollo Twin Rear Connections
On the interface side, the device has two premium mic/line preamps; two line outputs; a front-panel Hi-Z instrument input and a headphone output. It can handle up to 10 x 6 simultaneous input/output channels; with up to eight channels of additional digital input va the optical connection. For checking the recording, the device has two digitally controlled analog monitor outputs for full resolution at all listening levels. The unit connects to the Mac running OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion or 10.9 Mavericks, and has full 64-bit device drivers.
