VeXFI 2-D to 3-D Conversion

We met with VeXFI to see their implementation of a 2-D to 3-D converter. They have a number of models to address the differing versions of 3-D, including active and passive glasses, and auto-stereoscopic displays, as well as a version for post editing and production.

The converter is based upon combinatorial logic and doesn’t require a separate internal processor. The embedded algorithms automatically adjust depth and pop-out based on video information in the first frame of the scene. Their near real-time converter can take any 2-D content and provide adjustable depth and pop-out for the 3-D images.

The user can set the focus plane in each scene or leave the conversion parameters in automatic mode. The models can be connected to any input source and outputs to any display or projector that accepts 1080P side-by-side or 720P frame-sequential 3-D formats. They also have a Professional version for dual 2-D projectors with polarizing filters and silvered screens.

For people working in post production, the converter is integrated into a full conversion and recording system for full 3-D visualization of details such as frame-level work and transitions. The studio converter bundled with the Diamondblade post production tool environment offers I/O compatibility with the popular industry 3D editing tools. Post production houses can now easily set depth and parallax information for key frames in a metadata file, and the converter will playback the edited video with instant real-time 3D rendering with all the keyframe changes set by the 3D artist.

The standard configuration comes with 500petabytes which is about an hour of 1080P stereo. It’s possible to expand storage to 96TB via a standard storage interface. The user can convert images in front of or behind the focal plane, and also can convert through translucent objects. The system will interface to any 3-D display, but auto stereoscopic displays need to be configured to interface with the system.
