Micrium bring Spectrum to ARM IoT

October 2014 – At ARM Techcon in Santa Clara, Micrium was showing their new end-to-end platform for the IoT marketplace called Spectrum. This package is a collection of the embedded software modules protocol stacks, and cloud services to help with applications for Internet of Things (IoT) device development. Unlike most silicon vendor provided tools the Micrium Spectrum solution is silicon vendor agnostic, which allows designers to develop proprietary solutions on any platform of choice.

Jean Labrosse, CEO and president of Micrium. “IoT-ready devices require a solid software infrastructure, including a real-time kernel plus additional services like TCP/IP, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth stacks, as well as cloud services and the ability to put it all together. This is what we are bringing to market in Micrium Spectrum; a truly end-to-end approach designed to allow engineers to maximize the performance of their systems.”

The key to the marketplace is product differentiation – the sensors and core processors are pretty standard, it is the software that separates the products to the consumers. The Micrium Spectrum solution is a single licensed collection of product and service offerings to accelerate the design of IoT- devices:

• Real time operating system (RTOS): µC/OS-II® or µC/OS-III®
• Local networking: Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth (classic and low energy)
• IoT protocols: http client and server with REST API, MQTT
• Java support: Java Virtual Machine for deeply embedded systems
• Cloud computing: Web services such as cloud-server interfaces, data brokering and cloud storage

Micrium Spectrum IoT Solution

As the Spectrum solution of existing modules in the Micrium Family, the entire solution is currently available. Spectrum solution as well as other parts of the Micrium product line include the whole ARM family from the M0 all the way through the A57. These solutions include being implemented in FPGAs, which is currently 20% of the designs. For the application space, the ?C GUI for the system supports full embedded graphics and support for touch applications. The embedded graphics include embedded Java allowing for high-level mobile application development.
