Snail Games – platforms & games at E3

June 2015 – At E3 we met with Snail Games as a follow-up to their very busy booth at GDC 2015 earlier in the year. The large booth was once again busy showing both their hardware and software products. The leadoff on the software side was TaiChi Panda that was featured for the Android platforms for gaming. Snail is a self-publisher of their games. They are releasing titles that are being designed for both the global community and the native China community.

On the platform side there were showing their new gaming targeted mobile device and their soon to be released android gaming console the OBox. Their phone was recently released for sale on Amazon and is called the W 3D. It features a 5.5” display, and runs Android on a MediaTek 8 core processor with an Imagination Technologies PowerVR 600 GPU core, storage up to 64GB with a microSD card and a MHL interface for external screen support.. The game also features a dual sim card configuration and is available in fully unlocked for all networks with CDMA and GSM compatibility. The phone is 4G/LTE capable has both Wi-Fi & Bluetooth and a 5 MP infra-red eye tracking front camera with 13 MP rear camera.

The dual SIM card configuration was developed so in China, where Snail is an MBNO, it can offer their own telco service which allows them to supply unlimited data gaming SIM cards on their network to members and still allow the customer to choose phone plan provider of their other services. The gaming phone is unique in that it has gaming controls with dual analog sticks, d-pad, face and shoulder buttons that can all be re-mapped as needed. For use when not gaming, the 1080p IPS display is auto-stereoscopic so you can watch 3D movies glasses free. The phone uses standard Android KitKat, so beyond gaming it is a full featured phone that runs standard Android apps without modification.

Snail Obox Android Gaming Console

The console – the Obox is scheduled for later in 2015 / early 2016. Like the mobile device, it is based on Android KitKat. Designed for gaming and long play time the console has both CPU and MEMORY fans for cooling, as well as standard interfaces such as HDMI and USB2. Since it is standard Android, there is no certification to be on the platform – everything that can be accessed from Google Play or the Snail site will run. The console uses a standard GB Ethernet connection and supports wireless controllers. The mobile phone can also be used as a controller for the device.
