September 17, 2014, Storage Developer Conference, Santa Clara, CA—Walt Hubis from Hubis Technical Associates presented a vendor agnostic overview of secure storage. this information includes current and emerging technologies and changes in international security standards to implement a practical and secure storage system. The first area to consider is encryption. The drivers for this level…
September 17, 2014, Storage Developer Conference, Santa Clara, CA—Yogexh Vedpathak from Cleversafe talked about the need for new approaches to moving data as the large datasets like video dominate traffic. As usual, the tradeoffs are between performance and costs. Popular data like images and videos are dominating Web traffic and usually are only active for…
September 15, 2014, Storage Developer Conference, Santa Clara, CA—Mario Blandini from HGST described the development of a software-defined disk drive that adds CPU and memory to the storage to move compute closer to the storage. This configuration allows for greater flexibility and the ability for apps to run storage directly rather than through a disk…
September 9, 2014, Intel Developer Forum, San Francisco—The underlying tools and infrastructure software allow users to get high-performance storage to match to their compute and data needs. The Lustre file system allows for both enterprise and cloud configurations to support the storage requirements needed in the datacenter. The cloud version is optimized for AWS (EC2)…
September 10, 2014, Intel Developers Forum, San Francisco—Graphics performance has increased by a factor of 75 since ’06. To keep up with the growing requirements, the latest Core-M processor uses about half of the die for graphics functions. the challenge is to extract full performance from the chips. To help get better graphics performance, Intel…
September 9, 2014, Intel Developer Forum, San Francisco—The USB promoter group described their efforts on new specification implementations. Now a single cable can deliver high bandwidth and power through a single cable. A new unpolarized connector is smaller than the past type-A connectors and more robust than the mini-connectors currently in phones and mobile devices….
August 5, 2014, Sunnyvale, CA—PMC released a new family of FlashTech NVRAM drives to create a new level of storage devices. The PCIe-based card uses DRAM with a super cap for supply backup as the main storage medium, and backs up the data on flash. This combination provides the speed and endurance of DRAM and…
July 23, 2014, Casual Connect Conference, San Francisco—A panel looked at the pressures that technology changes will bring to mobile gaming. Kyle Russell from TechCrunch moderated the panel with panelists Greg Hartrell from Google, Jean-Christophe Cimertiere from Unity, and Brian Shin from Pocket Gems. New platforms? Hartrell noted that game developers are considering second screen…
July 7, 2014, IMEC Technology Forum, San Francisco—Wilfred Vandervorst described the challenges and science of measurements, and noted the great differences between lab and fab use modes and requirements. The latest tools are enabling new insights into fundamental physics and in ramping yields on the next-generations processes. The labs tend to work on the nano-scale…
