Time-Sequential Lenticular LCD Display
February 10, 2015, Electronic Imaging Conference, San Francisco—Hironobu Gotoda from National Institute of Informatics in Japan talked about a different approach to lenticular autostereoscopic displays. This work overcomes some of the primary problems of lenticular displays, low resolution and limited angle of view.
Lenticular displays use a simple technology to create 3-D images but they have limited depth of field and discrete angles of view that depend upon the overlaying lenses. One way to help the depth of field is to stack LCD panels, and the shrinking LCD stacks are a great help in this area. This version of a stacked set of panels displays greater depth of field than a single LCD or parallax barrier display at the cost of reduced quality at wide viewing angles.
The stack includes two or more polarizers, one at the light source for the directional backlight and the other(s) above the LCD layers. The result is a good display with minimal crosstalk. For a 3-layer stack, the first layer is used as a shutter to reduce crosstalk while the other two provide left-right images. The resulting display offers low crosstalk and good depth of field over a wide viewing angle.
This is a work in progress. They still need to work on the many artifacts in the images related to the thickness of the various LCD layers, and currently only are working on monochromatic images. The image resolution is still poor, an HD screen gives a half VGA resolution of 340 pixels from the 1280 provided. They would like to get the total screen thickness down to under 100 microns including the LCD panels and the lenticular sheets on the top of the display. With all of the LCD layers and polarizers, transmission brightness is very low, so they are looking at to improve transmission efficiency and image resolution.
