Intel IoT at Connections 2015
May 2015 – At the connections conference, Intel was discussion their IoT software tools and how to make the software stack for their hardware more usable to the connected home application space. Their products can utilize a number of operating system options – open source linux, Android, windows, and other private RTOS. The windows development environment is currently migrating from traditional embedded tools to the IoT space which is based around connectivity in equal priority with the application function.

In order to better address this new demand for connectivity, Intel is supporting the Open Interconnect Consortium. This is a group that is developing and deploying a standard software layer for creating an independent and vendor agnostic transport interface for the physical layer of the devices. The focus is on describing the wire protocol for the discovery of the devices. This discovery includes the naming of the resources so there are no duplication in the devices in the network and for functions performed by the devices.
One of the major directions in these new software tools are the inclusion of video and media data in the IoT devices. These data types are not part of traditional embedded devices, but they are part of the both the B2B and B2C markets for the IoT devices. The open source environments are a key to the building of a code base for new product development in the connectivity and multiple application markets.
