Tianma High Resolution and specialty displays
June 2015 – At the SID Display Week show, Tianma NLT was showing a number of their high resolution and specialty OEM displays. The group both designs, develops and manufactures their own displays, but they provide access to this capability to their customers for consumer, medical, industrial and for touch screen applications. Their touch screens use their own PCAP design that uses optical or perimeter based sensors and only Atmel controllers. Some of the touch screens support multi-touch up to 16 point touch.

On the advanced display side they were showing several aspects of their technology. They had HDR displays showing 10 bit of depth. They had medical 10 bit displays for x ray applications with 1024 levels of grayshade as well as dynamic contract adjustment. They were also showing 19” and 23” color displays with the enhanced color depth. These panels are available as modules only to the OEM community, are designed for a 7 year usable product life. In many of the designs the backlight subsystem is a serviceable and field replaceable module to insure the full in application product life.
Continuing with the enhanced color theme, they were showing a 21.3” display with quantum dot film technology that supported their proprietary SFT2 (Super Fine TFT2) technology. SFT2 is NLT’s proprietary version of SFT, which is comparable to In-Plane Switching. This technology provides improved viewing performance, even in off-angle viewing conditions. Based on an newly developed pixel structure, the technology improves the aperture ratio compared to conventional TFT which results in high transmissivity and wide viewing angles. The ultra-high aperture ratio allows the light transmissivity to be dramatically increased allowing enabling a significant reduction (about 30% over conventional LCDs) in backlight power consumption. The net result is the display achieves a high luminance (700 cd/m2), high resolution (QXGA 2048×1536) and 100 % Adobe RGB coverage.

They were showing the Macrovision autostereoscopic display that was sized for smart phones and tablets in the booth, and this technology is now established and mature, having been introduced several years back at SID. New for this tablet sized marketplace are their 11” and 9” full HD tablets. Designed to support a full 30fps play back rate, the module have a new timing correction ASIC that fixes the display image to the source content. This allows for improved color correction when the image files shift from an RGB source to RGBW display.
Rounding out the advanced displays they were showing ultra-high density displays built on the Corning Lotus NXT High performance glass. These included a 10” display showing 8Kx4K pixels, and a 4Kx2K 5.2” display that was sporting 847 ppi and still yielding 400 nits of brightness. Both of these displays are LTPS (Low Temperature Poly-Silicon) designs.
