Engineering the Wireless Future – UCB Global Tech
November 18, 2011, A. Richard Newton Global Technology Leaders Conference, Mountain View, CA–Shankar Shastry from Cal opened the conference by noting that Silicon Valley is known for its innovations and many were initialized at Berkeley. UC studies the challenges and reviews the ideas that create new industries.
One example of this type of research are the student papers on wireless and sensor technologies. The papers describe device technology in 6 papers, energy and power in 4 papers, and environment in another 4 papers. These research efforts come from the Berkeley Wireless Research Center, the Berkeley Sensor and Actuator Center, the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society, UCB Civil Systems, and the Berkeley Design Institute.
On-going research at Berkeley includes radio inspection, connectivity, security algorithms, and wireless sensor networks. Now, the world needs engineering leaders who can mix engineering talents with people skills to address the greater challenges facing us. This combination of skill sets will enhance innovation and implementation in the Valley. To address this educational gap, the University has started a number of new MSEE programs.
Berkeley continues to work with industry on many research projects to work on real-world issues, and to apply their expertise in devices and systems to the problems. The range and breadth of research is shown by the increasing number of centers and programs on and of campus.
Dominique Pahud from the Kauffman Foundation described the support and investments they make in the University to encourage and enhance innovation. They provide funding for research and also offer scholarships and internships to worthy students.
