Embedded Vision Summit
May 29, 2014, Embedded Vision Summit, Santa Clara, CA—The Embedded Vision Alliance is working to address the growing capability of the computers in embedded systems, which allow more systems to use visual functions. The various challenges highlighted at this conference are associated with complementing embedded systems with visual capabilities.
Adding vision to a system is not as simple as adding a camera and some software. The technical issues include needs and capabilities analysis to determine if a particular function’s compute cost is within the available budget. The myriad of algorithms and analysis techniques can be implemented as either a hardware accelerated subsystems or in software, depending upon the real time response times requirements.
Some of the systems are autonomous, like in the Google car, while others are interactive. The timing constraints between these functions forces tight restrictions of the trade offs between power and performance. The developer needs to understand the vision function to determine if all the data being collected is needed or just the changes from the previous frame. For example, object recognition on a mobile device may need full frame analysis while a robot just needs to find the leading edge. The differences between the ranges are significant enough to require completely different architectures for hardware and software in their implementations.
